Screen icon and legendary actor Richard Mofe-Damijo is set to return to the screen after a prolonged absence. He joins the cast of the MNet soap opera, Tinsel as the long lost father of Angela Dede (played by Matilda Obaseki). He makes his debut in the 500th episode of the soap opera.
RMD's journey to stardom began in the 80's, with his appearance in the soap operas, SPACS and Ripples, which showed on national TV in Nigeria. He was to go on to cement his place firmly in the hearts of his fans, with his magisterial interpretation of the character Segun Kadiri in the soap opera Checkmate. The emergence of Nollywood, saw him go on to star in some of the most memorable and best loved movies which have come out of the industry. These include Violated, Keeping Faith, The Diamond Ring, and Out of Bounds (which he wrote and produced). In 2005, he won the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
RMD took a break from his movie career, to acquire a second degree in Law, which he completed in 2004. Not long after completing his degree, he took everyone by surprise by going into the world of politics. He started out working for the the Delta State Government (Nigeria) as Special Adviser to the Governor on Entertainment and Talent Development. In January 2009, he was appointed as the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism for Delta State, a position, which he currently holds.
RMD has always be more than an actor. A self-made legend. Over the years, he has built himself into a brand. In addition to being an actor, he has also been a producer, publisher, PR executive, poet, and politician. There is no doubt about it - RMD is a confirmed big boy. His return to the screen is a cause célèbre for his many fans. We say welcome back sir! We've missed you a great deal.
