Funke "Jenifa" Akindele has taken it one step further again. The sequel to her highly successful movie Omo Ghetto will feature a number of stars drawn from different walks of life. These include Falilat Ogunkoya (Olympic medal winner), Bash Ali (former boxing champion), Mo Cheddah (hip-hop) artiste, and Denrele (TV personality). Funke is fast becoming adept at playing on her star power to secure appearances in her movies by celebrities cutting across the entertainment scene. In another one of her upcoming movies The Return of Jenifa, she brings together the best of the entertainment world with star appearances by Banky W, Eldee, baby-voiced comedian, Helen Paul, singer Omawumi, and Fuji king KWAM I.
Success not come easy for Funke. She was brought into the industry by highly respected actor and director, Kunle Coker. She had her first major role in the family TV series, I Need To Know, which was sponsored by UNFPA. She played the lead character, Bisi, in the now rested soap opera. I Need to Know was shown on the NTA network, and it ran for 4 years before it was rested. However, after I need to know was rested, acting jobs dried up despite her increased profile. This was the start of a heartbreaking time for her, during which she went from audition to audition, only succeeding in getting little money, minor roles, or no roles at all. Oftentimes her mother who is a medical doctor would drive her to auditions, because she was simply to broke to afford the transport fare. Many times, she would cry on her way back home from these auditions out of despair and disappointment. After attending many auditions, without success, she made the dramatic decision to shift to Yoruba language movies, and this may be the best decision she has ever made in her life. Over time, she became a regular face on movie jackets. She slowly, but steadily began to rise in the movie industry.
Funke's really big break, came with the release of her movie Jenifa, and the sequel Jenifa II. The movie struck a chord with movie fans across the world, and it flew of the shelves, as movie fans rushed to buy it in droves. In facct, success caught Funke unawares. She was herself surprised by the popularity of the movie. Ever since then, Funke has not looked back, rising to greater and greater heights. It seems Jenifa gave her the opportunity to unleash her creative talent. It remains to be seen if she can repeat the success of Jenifa, with her new movies. One thing is certain though, there is still a lot more to come from this young lady. We may only just have seen the tip of the iceberg.
