Award winning Nollywood actress, Sylvya Oluchy has been trying to talk black women into wearing their natural hair, she wants them to be proud and believe that black is beautiful
She talks on So Napptural campaign:
Hair is nothing but dead cells that grow out of the body.
Yet it is a woman's crown and glory and has become a standard of beauty. We all
have different weights, heights, skin/eye colours as well as different hair
textures. So why have we somehow chosen one hair type to be the penultimate
beauty standard to look trendy and fashionable? ?? In the words of the great
Bob Marley "emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves
can free our minds". As India Arie so soundly put it "I am not my
hair but a soul that lives within".
The #soNapptural campaign seeks to revive the beautiful
perception and pride in black hair and remove the "untidy, unkempt"
stigma placed on it. In the words of the great Bob Marley "emancipate
yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds". In
the words of India Arie "I am not my hair but the soul that lives
within".
Ever so often when I try to talk black women
into wearing their natural hair, they say to me while sitting in the chair at
the saloon waiting for the relaxer to straighten their hair "this is my
natural hair". So I rephrase "NAPPTURAL ie nappy and natural, the way
God intended". Are you black and proud? Do you believe black is beautiful?
